2v2+3 (5v2) Progression Activation Rondo (FREE PREVIEW)
2v2+3 (5v2) Progression Activation Rondo
Purpose:
This positional rondo is designed to help players develop the ability to manipulate defenders, progress play through tight spaces, and create temporary overloads to maintain or recover possession. It’s ideal as a warm-up or activation activity with tactical depth.
Set-Up
Field Dimensions:
A rectangular area split into two 10x10 yard squares (adjust for age/level).
Teams:
- 2v2 inside the area
- 3 neutrals (yellow) support the team in possession
- 1 team starts with the ball, neutrals always play with the team in possession
Starting Play:
Play begins with the in-possession team attempting to move the ball and progress into the opposite square. The coach can determine whether progression must be by pass, dribble, or both.
How It Works
- The attacking team uses the 3 neutrals to maintain possession and attempt to progress into the opposite square.
- They must move defenders laterally or vertically to open up progression lanes.
- Defenders aim to keep the ball in front, delay forward passes, and ultimately create a momentary overload to win the ball.
- If defenders win the ball, they attempt to hold possession.
- Rotate roles after a set time or recovery.
Reflection Points
✅ Manipulate to Progress:
Attackers must shift defenders through quick ball circulation. Every reception should set up a potential forward pass. Highlight the importance of reception shape and scanning.
✅ Play Forward with Intent:
Encourage players to always look to progress. Only recycle possession if forward options are blocked.
✅ Defending Two at Once:
Defenders must angle their pressure to reduce passing options and be ready to step together to trap the ball. Train the ability to cover one while stepping to another.
✅ Transition Cues:
This game also trains players to respond quickly after losing or winning possession—highlighting micro-moments of transition.
Variations to Keep It Fresh
- Dribble or Pass Progression: Choose whether players can dribble, pass, or must combine to enter the next square.
- Touch Limit: Introduce a 2-touch or 3-touch rule as an intentional constraint.
- Neutral Movement: Allow one neutral to float between both squares to create dynamic overloads.
- Time Challenge: Set a time limit to progress into the other square and reward purposeful build-up.
