3v1 to 5v4 to Goal - Finishing Game (FREE PREVIEW)
3v1 to 5v4 to Goal – Finishing Game
Purpose:
This game is designed to create fast-breaking moments where attackers transition from a tight overload into a dynamic 5v4 toward goal. It emphasizes timing, recognition, and execution, especially in the early moments of disorganization. Ideal for training final-third combinations and finishing.
Set-Up:
Field Dimensions:
- 10x10 yard square wide on one side of the field (for the 3v1) (adjust size for numbers)
- Central zone leading into a full-sized goal at one end
- Two small counter-goals on the opposite side
Teams:
- 5 attackers
- 4 defenders + goalkeeper
- Start with 3 white players and 1 black defender inside the wide-area square
- Remaining players in designated start positions, ready to enter when ball exits square
Numbers can be adjusted to minimize players waiting as substitutes eg. 4v2 to 6v5 to Goal
How It Works
- The coach starts play by passing into one of the three attackers in the 3v1 square.
- Attacking team attempts to maintain possession and break out of the square or certain number of passes.
- Once the ball exits the square, it becomes a live 5v4 toward goal.
- Defenders recover into the central space as attackers drive forward.
- Attacking team scores in the large goal; defending team counterattacks to the mini goals.
- Rotate roles every few reps or a set time limit; track goals for both sides.
Reflection Points
✅ Dribble to Commit, Pass to Exploit:
The ball carrier should attack the next direct opponent at speed to force a reaction, then time the pass when the defender is fully engaged.
Cue: “Draw the pressure before you release, don’t pass early.”
✅ Off-Ball Movement for Final Actions
Supporting attackers should position themselves to receive and shoot quickly once the ball exits the square. You can emphasize exploiting space behind back line as well as space in front of front line when no space behind the back line. Additionally, players should support the ball in case of not being able to progress and needing to maintain possession.
Cue: “Are you exploiting behind backline, in front of backline, or to reset if necessary?”
✅ Recognizing Disorganization
The attacking team must read the defensive shape and act before it stabilizes.
Cue: “Can we finish before they recover?”
Variations to Keep It Fresh
- Touch Limit in 3v1: Encourage faster decisions before breaking out.
- Time Limit After Exit: White must shoot within 6–8 seconds after leaving the square.
- Trailing Defender: Defender(s) who starts behind play and recovers as pressure.
- Number Shift: Run 4v1 to 6v5 for larger group involvement or more realism.
- Finish with a Constraint: White must finish with a one-touch shot or use a wide player.
