2v1 Continuous with Pressure from Behind (FREE PREVIEW)

Continuous 2v1 with Pressure from Behind

Purpose:

Create repeated 2v1 scenarios that train players to recognize when and how to draw a defender before releasing the ball. The activity sharpens decision-making, off-ball support movement, and directional dribbling under pressure. Players must learn to manipulate defenders to progress with the ball.

Set-Up:

Field Dimensions:

Approximately 10 x 15 yards (adjust for level of difficulty)

Teams:

  • Two teams of minimum 3 players per team.
  • 1 target player placed behind each defensive line.

The attacking team aims to move the ball from one side of the playing area to the other.

It's a continuous game that has constant role changes, like a match.

How It Works

  1. The outside attacker passes into their teammate inside the square to begin the 2v1.
  2. Once the ball enters the square, the live 2v1 starts.
  3. The objective is for the attacking team to beat the defender and dribble across the end line.
  4. If the defender wins the ball or knocks it out, roles immediately switch.
  5. Points are awarded for each successful end-line dribble.

Reflection Points

✅ Timing the Release to Draw the Defender:

Encourage ball carriers to delay the pass until the defender is fully committed.

Cue: “Commit the defender then release.”

✅ Directional Dribbling & Body Orientation:

On-ball players should dribble to force a defensive reaction and create passing or exploit dribbling lane.

Cue: “Dribble with intention, what are you inviting the defender to do? What are they giving you?

✅ Off-Ball Support Positioning:

Supporting players must choose angles that stay out of the defender’s line of sight while staying visible to the ball carrier.

Cue: “Support where the defender can’t see you, but your teammate can.”

Variations to Keep It Fresh

  • Change Start Position: Start with both attackers in the square for quicker decisions
  • Add an Offside Line: To progress toward Step 3 realism, incorporate an offside line behind the defender.
  • Time Constraint: Players must score within 6–8 seconds to increase urgency.
  • Directional Gate: Instead of a full end line, require players to dribble through a small gate to finish.
  • Recovery Defender: Add a trailing defender who enters 1–2 seconds after the play starts.
